Five For Friday – Book Ban Fail (oops)

Hello everyone! So as some of you might of read I chose to have a book buying ban for the month of March. I was on track doing REALLY well until my month got ruined by a certain someone in my life. I had an oops moment, a “relapse” if you will and bought some books to try and cheer me up. Not that I have read any as I have really gone off my reading… Anyway I only bought 5x books for the whole month which was pretty good.

1. How To Stop Time by Matt Haig
I got this because it is my local book club’s March pick. I LOVED Matt Haig’s non-fiction books about anxiety and depression I read them so quickly. I didn’t even realise he had written fiction novels. Unfortunately I wasn’t in the mood for reading last month so I have barely started it. But hoping to get into this one ASAP because I know I will love it.

2. Get Your SHIT Together by Sarah Knight
I loved Sarah’s first book The Life Changing Magic of not Giving A Fuck! Such an empowering, funny awesome read. And with the way things have been of late I need to get my SHIT together. I have started this book a bit, I’m not connecting with it as much as the other book but still great stuff and it makes me laugh out loud.

3. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I’ve seen this book on Instagram and in Waterstones and lots of good reviews. I found it on ibooks for 99p so just snatched it right up. I know nothing about it so have no idea what genre it is or anything. Just wanted to buy something new and cheap. If you have read it let me know, tell me what it’s about.

4. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
My friend mentioned this book to me ages ago and said its a kind of 1984 dystopian future style novel. I love those kinds of books and it was also 99p on ibooks so have got this one to read too.

5. Advice On Love and Life From Someone Who’s Been There by Cheryl Strayed
I love Cheryl Strayed, I loved her memoir Wild. She is an empowering and amazing woman. I had no idea she was also “Dear Sugar” an agony aunt, advice columnist. This book is a collection of some of her advice answers to people who wanted her help. The letters are deep, raw, full of emotion, some sad and all powerful. Cheryl or Mrs Sugar writes back with a blunt honestly that these people need to hear, she is sympathetic, kind but also stern and to the point. This is the only book I’ve read in the last few weeks and although all the letters don’t relate to me her advice in many does.

So my book buying plan didn’t go…to plan but I got 5x new books out of it and I felt like I really needed to buy them to cheer me up. Has anyone read any that I have mentioned? Let me know I would love to chat. Katie x

I’ve read Evelyn Hugo and Brave New World, thought they were both great!! Evelyn Hugo is a contemporary/historical fiction (most of it takes place in the past) and is about a reporter interviewing Evelyn about her entire life as a Hollywood star and the seven husbands she had along the way. A very unique story with some great topics! Brave New World I remember less as I read it several years ago, but I also love dystopias, especially ones written a while ago that end up shadowing our current life quite well, which I think this one does. Excited to hear what you think about them!

I’ve read Evelyn Hugo and Brave New World, and they’re both fantastic! A few times I forgot I was reading fiction while reading Evelyn Hugo because it all seems so real and so true to classic Hollywood starlets. How to Stop Time is on my list of things to read.
